Indigo is a blue pigment extracted from several plants: true indigo, woad and Japanese indigo (dyer's knotweed). Unlike other colours, it does not dissolve in water, which calls for a very particular dyeing process: setting up an indigo vat. Our indigo workshops let you discover and master the age-old art of indigo dyeing and understand the natural chemistry at work, while everyone leaves with unique, personalised creations. Half day: the workshop runs from 2pm to 5.30pm. First you will learn how to use an indigo vat, then make a range of samples in different shades of blue, with patterns created using Japanese shibori techniques. You will then dye a cotton stole with your own patterns. Isabelle will guide you through the patterns and the use of the indigo vat to achieve a fast, 100% natural blue. Full day: full-day workshops start at 9.30am with setting up an indigo vat, which gradually activates so that it is ready to use in the afternoon. You will then prepare a clay-based resist paste to try out some patterns. While your creations dry, Isabelle takes you into the garden to learn to recognise indigo plants (when the plants are mature) and explains a little more about indigo and how to look after a vat. The afternoon is devoted to dyeing. First you will learn how to use an indigo vat, then make a range of samples, including a blue shade chart and patterns created using Japanese shibori techniques. You will also dye the patterns you prepared in the morning. You will finish by dyeing your personalised cotton stole and completing all the finishing steps for a long-lasting, 100% natural blue. You leave with your creations and the recipe for making and maintaining an indigo vat. Full day – making indigo pigment: the day begins by picking plants in the garden. Then it's back to the studio to turn them into insoluble indigo pigment and understand how it forms. The afternoon is devoted to using indigo: setting up a small vat, then handling and experimenting with indigo pigment. This workshop is only possible when the Japanese indigo plants are in leaf. Aprons and gloves are provided. Lunch is not provided – please bring a picnic. Give your clothes a new look: if you would like to make a personal creation, Isabelle can help you do so at the studio. You can bring your own white clothes or buy the fabric of your dreams on site. Quote on request, priced by fabric weight from €10 per 100g. Large formats: this workshop teaches you how to set up an iron vat, a henna vat or a 1-2-3 vat (100 litres minimum), prepare large pieces of fabric for dyeing, then dye your creations. Limited to 4 people. You may bring up to 2.5kg of fabric, and you can stay overnight on site (see 'Stay on site' on the website). Price on request. For all workshops, meals are not provided; tea and coffee are available, and gloves and aprons are lent.
